University Cites Lackluster Season and Need for Change

Starkville, Mississippi –

Mississippi State University has fired football head coach Zach Arnett after just one season at the helm. The decision was announced Monday morning by athletic director John Cohen.

In a statement, Cohen cited a "lackluster 2023 season" and a need for "leadership change" as reasons for the firing. The Bulldogs finished the season with a 4-8 record, including a 1-7 mark in Southeastern Conference (SEC) play.

Arnett, who was hired in December 2022, becomes the third Mississippi State football coach to be fired after one season since 1993. His dismissal marks the end of a tumultuous tenure marcado by off-field controversies and disappointing on-field results.

The university has not yet named an interim coach, but a search for Arnett's replacement is expected to begin immediately.
