Mississippi State's Arnett on Defense, Bulldogs' Struggles: Exclusive Interview

Zach Arnett Opens Up About Defensive Philosophy, MSU's Challenges

Zach Arnett, the defensive coordinator for Mississippi State University's Bulldogs, has a deep-rooted philosophy when it comes to defense: "If they don't score, they can't win." This unwavering belief has been a driving force behind the Bulldogs' success on the defensive side of the ball in recent years.

Despite Mississippi State's defensive prowess, the team has struggled offensively. Against SEC opponents, Arnett's defense has ranked among the top in the conference, but the offense has faltered. In 2021, the Bulldogs ranked third in total defense (352.3 yards allowed per game), and in 2020, they ranked fourth (380.3 yards allowed per game). However, before Arnett's arrival in 2019, they ranked 11th (419.3 yards allowed per game).

Arnett is a self-described "curmudgeon" who is not easily swayed by outside opinions. Despite the Bulldogs' offensive struggles, he remains optimistic about the team's potential. "We have a lot of work to do, but I believe in our players and our coaches," he said. "We're going to continue to work hard and improve, and we're going to make some noise in the SEC this year."
